Very patiently.

Jahari

We could put our rhythm cards there.

Zion

And something to play them with.

Jahman

Good timing. These belong in your music corner.

Pax

A delivery cart!

Lux

And four shakers.

Zion

One for each of us.

Jahman

The cart follows picture directions. Shall we plan its route together?

Jahari

Forward two squares, turn right, forward one, then stop.

Lux

That takes it around the table.

Pax

And straight to our shelf.

Zion

That is the route we predict.

Lux

One basket on each side. Ready.

Jahman

Once we press start, hands and feet stay behind the line.

Jahman

If anything looks wrong, I press stop. Nobody grabs a moving cart.

Pax

Even if it forgets where the shelf is?

Jahman

Especially then.

Jahari

Route ready.

Go, cart, go!

It took the left it wanted, not the right we gave it.

I want to change the right-turn card.

Lux

I wonder if a basket shifted.

Zion

I still think I heard something.

Pax

I think the cart likes left.

Jahman

Those are ideas. How could we find out which idea fits what happened?

Jahman

What should they test first?

Jahari

Let’s test the direction idea first.

Jahari

No turn card—only forward, forward, stop.

Pax

Zion

One changed thing: the directions.

Jahari

If the right-turn card made it go left, this route should go straight.

Jahman

Your two lines bend almost together.

I’m drawing where it went, not where we wanted it to go.

Both started here. Both bent left here.

Zion

Before a turn card could tell it to turn.

Jahari

So my direction-card idea did not match our test.

Lux

It was worth checking.

Jahari

Yes. Now we can try the next idea.

What if the things on top are pushing one side more?

Pax

They look even.

Lux

They do. But we can test the cart without them.

Jahari

Then we won’t have to decide by looking.

We change the load and nothing else.

Jahman

And what do you predict?

If the load made it turn, the empty cart should go straight.

Pax

If it still goes left, we need a different idea.

Jahari

The empty one followed the others.

Lux

Then our test did not support the load idea.

I thought the baskets might be the reason.

Jahari

It was a sensible thing to test.

Zion

And now we know the cart turns even when it is empty.

Lux

That result helps, even though my guess changed.

Jahman

What do your tests tell you so far?

Jahari

It turns before the right-turn card.

Pax

It turns on the same side each time.

Lux

And it turns without the load.

Zion

Then I want to listen to the cart itself.

Zion

I heard a little scrape before, but we were all talking.

Zion

Can we repeat the empty run with no voices and no music?

Pax

A listening test.

Jahman

Yes. We’ll watch from the safe line and let the cart make the only sounds.

Zion

Scrape, turn. Scrape, turn.

Zion

It came from the left side at the back.

The same side as the curve.

Pax

Is the wheel arguing with the floor?

Jahman

That sound gives you a place to look.

Jahman

First I switch the power off, remove the key and set the brake. Wheels can pinch fingers.

Jahari

We wait until you say it is safe.

Jahman

Power off. Key out. Brake set.

Jahman

The cart is safe to look at. Keep your hands clear while I hold it.

Jahari

The right wheel has space around it.

Jahari

The left one has something tucked beside it.

Zion

Where the scrape came from.

Jahari

It’s a ribbon!

Jahari

It’s caught between the wheel and the guard.

Lux

So it rubs every time the wheel turns.

Pax

The cart has been delivering ribbon to itself.

Lux

The knot is still up here. One long end slipped down.

Zion

That is what I heard.

Jahari

And what pulled this side while it rolled.

Jahman

You found it. I’ll free it while the cart stays off.

Jahman

Ribbon free. Guard secure.

Pax

It has a very wheel-shaped wrinkle.

Lux

Shall we put the baskets back now?

Jahari

Not yet. First we repeat the last test.

Pax

Empty cart. Forward, forward, stop. Same start.

Zion

Same quiet room.

Lux

The only change is the ribbon is no longer rubbing.

Jahman

Then the next path can test your explanation.

Jahari

We changed only the ribbon. What do you predict now?

Zion

No scrape.

Pax

Straight from start to stop!

Our prediction matched what happened.
